He nods, and takes out a crayon to scribble some of this down.

"How do you know if they're really having fun or if they're lying that they are and really just stalling until they can find the exits?"

[14thcommander]

"Sometimes you won't and people won't tell you. Watch body language. If someone's pulling away from you, let them go, or hold them loosely enough in the first place that they can pull away. Eyes and shoulders are good things to watch... I'm a bad person to ask about this, honestly, because I'm not always good at it."

He nods back, enthusiastic.

"I'm great at noticing when people are scared of me! Maybe I can twist that into 'general disgust or dislike'!"

[14thcommander]

"Yeah." Dry. "And you get why that is, right? Because someone who is predisposed to dislike you is probably not the best person to build a lasting relationship with."

[beejfu]

An ill nod back.

"Yeah, tell that to my ex-wives. I get it, I get it."

[14thcommander]

"We have multiple of those...?"

[beejfu]

A shrink down in his chair.

"Just the two."

[14thcommander]

"Hmhmhm."

She swallows her laugh, and then shakes herself a bit, still in place.

"Well - there's things you need to think about adjusting, to maintain your relationships better. Selfishness, for instance, is something that will exhaust people and eventually drive them away from you, because it means you're sustained, and they're not... they'll go to what sustains them. But there's parts of you that aren't wrong, but just aren't to everyone's taste, and your most successful relationships will probably be with people whose taste they are."

He nods a little, sighing.

"The new kid is exactly my type. Undead, cute, likes murder and musicals. Rhys is pissed."

[14thcommander]

"Based on what Rhys says - maybe he just needs some space and to get used to the idea in his own time?"

[beejfu]

He shakes his head.

"No, he's right. I did him dirty. I broke it off with baby vamp and I'll go write an apology song to Stringbean."

[14thcommander]

At this, Hange simply nods. It's Betelgeuse's prerogative on how to handle this, whether he wants to try and make two boyfriends work, or dump them all. Hange has minimal relationship experience so...

"Do you still want to try being human? We talked about it before."

He perks right the fuck up at that suggestion, dropping immediately out of his malaise.

"I thought you forgot about that!"

[14thcommander]

"If you think I forget about something and it's important to you, please mention it! Anyway, no I didn't!"

He is thrumming with excitement, all the lights in Hange's room beginning to flicker.

"Can we do that? Can you ask the Admiral?"

[14thcommander]

"I can do it now, but you gotta step out, because I'm asking for some other stuff as a surprise!"

He is so super excited that he obeys without question, leaping up out of the chair and bolting out of the room.

Hange chuckles, and then gets her communicator and puts in the request. Once it's granted (or not), she lets Betelgeuse in again.

He comes back into the room with a toothy grin, so excited and bouncing on his heels.

"Hey, can I hug you? Because you are making all my wildest dreams come true."

[14thcommander]

"Yeah." She gestures him nearer and steps into the embrace when it's imminent.

[beejfu]

He wraps his arms around her and hugs her tight. Not enough to hurt. Just enough.

"You think I'll know when it happens? How long should I wait?"

[14thcommander]

As always, when she's held in place like this Hange feels her usual little twinge of unease, a desire to move away. She bears up through it, because Betelgeuse is important to her, and she wants him to be happy and comfortable. It's not so bad.

"Maybe? Ohh... Give it a couple hours at least?"

He lets her go pretty quick once she twitches, trying to be on his best behavior. Betelgeuse nods, all nervous energy now, and retreats back to his chair.

"Holy shit. Holy shit. Human. A living, breathing breather. I can't believe it."

"I forgot to request an end date!"

Crap.

"How long do you want your trial to be?"

"What?" he croaks, the smile fading.

"No, I want this to be permanent. No trials, I'll pay for the full package. I wanna be alive for real."
