Within the past ten years - the past five, really - we managed to eradicate the titans outside the walls and discovered that we lived on an island, the only one in the world plagued with titans. Instead of being full of insentient giants who wanted to eat us, the world was full of other humans, many of whom hated us and wanted us dead."
